Extreme Engagement
Being a fan of global explorers and tales of great expeditions, I am always on the look out for commentary or articles that refer to such leadership but in a business context. I found this article briefly captured the essence of Shackleton’s leadership during the great Antarctic “survival” of 1914-16. I found it specifically pertinent as I read so much about how to retain staff over the coming months.
There is much talk of leadership being critical at this time in this extraordinary economic cycle, and of the impact that leadership has directly on employee engagement. We sometimes get blinded by science and theory and forget that the great leaders in all walks of life have shared a common innate value: They have invariably possessed a genuine and honest desire for their charges to prosper – in this case, survive – and have often at times put the wellbeing of their team before their own.
Does a competitive business environment allow for such behaviour, especially now when so much is required of every single member of staff?
I am really keen to hear any examples of work being done in organisations to work with leadership to adapt to a different style during these unique times. If anyone has any live examples I would love to hear them.
